For nearly 140 years, the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Pittsburgh (HFLA) has helped people of all backgrounds become financially stable and achieve new opportunities. We are proud to offer interest-free loans of up to $10,000 for many needs & to have a 97% repayment rate!
According to one recent borrower, Amy: "“I’m incredibly grateful for the work you do. Your support helped me get out from under predatory credit card debt at a time when I felt really stuck, and that relief created the possibility for me to move toward homeownership in a way that once felt impossible. You help people not just survive difficult moments but rebuild stability and hope without trapping them in more debt. HFLA has already served more than 425 individuals and families with life-changing interest-free loans this year, including:
- a retiree needing a sewage issue repaired to safely remain in her home
- an immigrant refurbishing a food truck to expand their business
- a couple buying a larger vehicle to support their growing family
- a student paying tuition so they can graduate on time
As families struggle with the rising cost of living, we have seen a 30% increase in applications compared to the same period last year. HFLA is committed to meeting this growing demand. To strengthen our capacity and continue our rich legacy of helping
people while they maintain their dignity, this year we have:
- hired Maureen Quinn as our full-time Program & Loan Coordinator
to guide applicants through the loan process - partnered with Giving Credit to help build an alternative credit reporting system based on peer lending and character
- collaborated with Allegheny County Financial Empowerment Center, Pittsburgh Hispanic Development Corporation, and JFundsPGH partners
Your donation supports our efforts to provide interest-free and no-fee loans, and as a borrower repays a loan, that money can then be used for a new loan for another borrower. In this way, a single donation generates many more times its value.
